The library will present two film screenings in June. Both movies will start at 2:00PM in the library's Friends' Meeting Room on the 2nd floor. Admission is free to the public. The Friends of the Monterey Park Library will provide light refreshments for the audience at the screenings.

This month's international film screening on June 20th (Wednesday) is a Japanese film "Black Rain". Released in 1989, this film was based on the novel of the same name by Ibuse Masuji. The events are centered on the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.

This film has won several international film awards, including an award from Cannes Film Festival. (This movie has English subtitles).

On June 17th (Sunday), we'll be showing a Chinese kungfu film "14 Blades". The story happened in late Ming Dynasty in China when the imperial court was plagued by corruption as eunuchs usurp state power and the reigning emperor is incompetent. The Jinyi Wei (brocade-clad guards) are the government's secret police. Trained in clandestine combat since childhood, they are in charge of conducting missions to ensure peace and stability within the empire. They have the authority to prosecute anyone deemed as an enemy of the state and they devote their lives and lethal prowess to serving the emperor only. Qinglong, the Jinyi Wei leader, was ordered by the eunuch chief to carry out an assassination. But he later finds out that he was betrayed and has to escape with his life. (This movie has English subtitles).
